D. L. Rees – History

Doug Rees worked his way through Whitman College using the skills he learned in his grandfather’s cabinet shop and on his father’s remodeling projects. After graduation, he returned to Boston and worked for three years remodeling Colonial homes, Victorian mansions, and a Frank Lloyd Wright influenced design (above).

Returning to the Seattle area, Doug spent the next two years framing and finishing the production-oriented “Street of Dreams” homes for Steven D. Smith, before starting D. L. Rees Contracting (DLRC)  in 1990.

Green and Gold

In 2001, Doug had an opportunity to administer the U.S. Green Building Council’s program for IslandWood (formerly the Puget Sound Environmental Learning Center), Washington’s first Gold-certified “LEED” Building. Doug was then able to apply those same standards to a local remodel, and reach 3-Star Green Certification with the “Built Green” Program. DLRC is an advocate  of “green building,” noting that it not only saves on energy costs, but often increases the resale value of the home.

In 2002, Doug Rees obtained his Master’s Degree in Construction Management from the University of Washington (named as one of the top two schools in the nation for CM).  He soon found himself in demand  as a project manager, working for companies such as Schultz Miller and Odyssey Builders before deciding to focus once again on his own business.
